Artist Statement:
My sculptures are an exploration to unleash what is already in the wood, as seen through its shape and form, or finding the right piece to manifest and represent the ideas in my head. My visions always seem to illustrate a life, persona, or identity in some way, open to whatever interpretation people will perceive. Each piece holds a story of a personality and identity that is left to be interpreted by the on-looker.
My visions are sometimes instant when I see a piece of wood, others may take time through a progressive study and interpretation. Some visions manifest themselves in my head, and then I am driven to find the right piece, and problem solve its creation. The time taken to create the pieces range from a few hours, to hundreds of hours.
Each piece is unique and comes from a special piece of wood. I love working with wood, as it was once a living entity that had its own life and story to tell. The pieces I use are often found wood selected simply to keep telling the story of the tree, and preserve and develop its ongoing tale. I seek out unique and odd pieces of wood, from any and all varieties. Many pieces have been found while hiking, traveling, or simply keeping an open eye while exploring the Niagara region. Other pieces are from my property or have been discovered and delivered by friendly acquaintances. Wood is my dominate media, but metal working and other found objects are often used to tell the story of a certain piece.
